Happy Birthday To Me!

August 27, 2007

Please excuse the mess in the background…that would be my office. Look what I just got! I’ve never, ever gotten flowers delivered to the front desk at work before. Maybe not quite as unique as the candle in the powerbar this morning (the older gentleman in the office next to mine is a riot) but I love them!  I was feeling really down last night due to some ex-related issues but Tom assured me I’d have a good birthday. So far, so good! I am feeling happy and rather spoiled right now and it’s very nice, especially after last night. We’re heading out to lunch in just a bit and then we’re getting steak for dinner. Aside from having to work today (since I don’t have any vacation time saved up anymore) it looks like it’s going to be a great day!

First Grade!

August 22, 2007

Today is Luke’s first day of first grade. I can’t believe it! Here are a couple of pictures:

With his new backpack:

I can’t believe he’s in first grade. We finished up the summer with a trip to Knott’s Soak City in Chula Vista on Monday. At 49.5 inches tall he could go on everything. And he did! Even the super fast scary slides that I wasn’t sure I wanted to go on (I did, though; couldn’t be shamed by the six year old!). I was really amazed though at how fearless he was; he didn’t even hesitate.

There isn’t a single kid in his first grade class that was in his kindergarten class but his good friend, Aidan, is in his class. We’ve known her and her family since they were 2.5 and in preschool. She and her aunt went with us Monday to Soak City. He knew several kids in his class from t-ball and the after school program (ESS) so he’ll be fine. I hope he does okay with the longer school day! Soccer practice starts tomorrow afternoon; we bought new cleats, shin guards, and a ball yesterday since the ones from last year were all too small. Just like that summer is over and the whirlwind of activities has begun!

Early Birthday Present!

August 16, 2007

My birthday isn’t until the 27th but Tom surprised me yesterday by giving me my present early. It wasn’t a total surprise because he’d mentioned it before but I wasn’t expecting to get it last night! He got me…a Nintendo Wii! It’s so cool! How I’m supposed to find the time to play it in addition to everything else I want to do I’m not sure. I’ll manage of course. I’m sure he and Luke will take plenty of turns playing it as well so I can always stitch then. It came with Wii Sports and he got the Wii Play set (with an extra controller and 9 little games). I’m planning to get Dance Dance Revolution when it comes out in another month or two and I’ll bet I get a game or two for my birthday as well; I’m glad he got it early so then my brothers can have the option to get stuff related to it since I wasn’t sure what I wanted before. I think it is awesome that you can get a “classic” controller and download the original Mario Bros game for $5.

I’ve never had my very own, brand new game system before. I’ve had hand-me-down stuff like a Playstation when my brother upgraded to a Playstation2 but that’s about it. This one is so cool because it doesn’t have to be a sedentary activity. You can actually work up quite a sweat with the boxing game. Evening exercise after Luke’s in bed, here I come!

Backpacking Along the JMT, Part 2

August 15, 2007

Okay, so I spent last week up at my mom’s and backpacking. I’m not doing the long descriptive thing for this trip, just a brief summary and a couple photos. I think the highlight of the time in Camarillo is that my middle brother bought a Nintendo Wii, which is totally awesome. It was also nice to get to be there to celebrate my youngest brother’s birthday a few days early.

Backpacking was in the sierra’s this time along the Pacific Crest and John Muir Trails (part 2 because last year was part 1). It was about 20 grueling miles between 8000 and 10000 feet of altitude over three days and I am really not in very good shape. Despite the warnings from the ranger we did not see any bears. Supposedly they’re really bad this year but not a sign of them at all. Here are a few pictures:

We’ve determined that two backpacking trips less than a month apart is just too much. I love getting into the backcountry and seeing such amazing places but I need a little more time between trips in the future.

I am now pretty much out of vacation time for awhile. Luke starts first grade next Wednesday anyway so I won’t have the opportunity to go anywhere for some time. The focus of my life for the next few months will be school, soccer, Adopt-A-Family (I’m the chair on the PTA), music at church (preparing for Yuletide since I’m in the choir) and hopefully a few moments of peace to myself between it all! I’d really love to get my house organized and decluttered, get some stitching done, and get back into the swing of things with diet and exercise. I expect I’ll be so busy these coming months that the remainder of the year will fly by like the rest of it has so far.

Two Down…

August 2, 2007

Teeth, that is! Here is a picture from this morning with Luke’s two bottom teeth missing:

He was in the pool at Tom’s parent’s house on Monday evening when one of the other kids came running in saying he’d lost the tooth (it had been pretty loose so it was definitely expected). Luke wasn’t sure when he’d lost it and he was in the pool so all of the kids were diving down to find the tooth. Miraculously it was the other six year old who found it on the patio. I finally took a picture this morning. His first permanent tooth has broken the skin so I don’t expect he’ll have the big gap for long.

Things are okay here but I’ve been busy. Tom had a bunch of family in town and just about everyone went home yesterday so it was the first night in about a week that it was just the three of us for dinner.

I’ve somehow managed to stitch a little bit here and there. I’ve made a lot of progress on Alpine Seasons and I plan to stick with it until it’s done. I may have to take a day or two to finish an ornament but that’s all.

Well I’m sure I have more to say (as usual) but I don’t have the time right now to post anything else. Luke starts school in just under three weeks…1st grade…where did the time go?
