Rivendell!

Awhile back I joined in this whole “walk to Rivendell” thing. I’m sure if you’re a stitcher and you visit the Wagon or one of the other stitching BB’s then you’ve heard of it. Last night I logged the final mile (and two more). 458 miles since October 17th of last year. I’m continuing on to Lothlorien next and then the rest of the way beyond that. It is another 462 miles to Lothlorien so I’ve got 460 left.

I do have some more good news: I’m going backpacking in Yosemite in August!! I’ll be going with three other people. We’re planning to do the 32 miles stretch of the John Muir Trail from Tuolomne Meadows Ranger Station to Devil’s Postpile. In 3 days. The trip starts at 8700′ and the trail includes the 11,050′ Donahue Pass. I’m not nearly in good enough shape for it yet but I have one month (from yesterday) to get there. I have always wanted to go to Yosemite; I love traveling and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, etc and have lived in California nearly my entire life. I find it shameful that I’ve never been there. My dad says I was there as a small child but if I don’t remember it then it doesn’t count. We’ll be spending one day in the valley (along with how many thousands of other people?). With everything else that is going on in my life I am thrilled to be able to look forward to something for a change.

I’m driving up to Camarillo tonight since my best friend’s son’s christening is tomorrow. Any idea what you’re supposed to get someone as a christening gift? While I’m not Catholic (she is) I have still been designated as a godparent and I have no idea what that really entails. This is the same friend for whom I made the christening gown. Any advice on that would be great, thanks.

    You’re in Rivendell? *kowtows* I’m not worthy!! I’m only 1/3 of the way there….

    For christening/baptism gifts, typical items are things like photo albums, children’s Bibles or biblical-themed storybooks, or other devotional or Christian-themed items. At least, that’s what my DD got at her Baptism a few years ago.

    I’m jealous … Yellowstone! ::sigh:: :o)

    Check out this site for gifts, at a quick glance seems to be exactly what you need.

    Congratulations on both your trips (Rivendell and Yosemite)! And I would think the gown itself would be gift enough!!

    Yosemite sounds like it’s going to be divine! Congrats on reaching Rivendell. I started the walk, too, went about 2 miles, and haven’t walked since. My herniated disc just wouldn’t cooperate. Now that I’m feeling better I have to try it again.

    Most people give money for Christening gifts. Around here (New York) the standard is about $50.00 minimum. As a Godparent, you could give more.

    And from what I understand, being a Godparent means it’s your responsibility to make sure the child is raised in the Catholic faith, should something happen to the parents. Hope that helps!

    I am sooooo jealous. I visited Tuolumne Meadows about 7 years ago and I’ve been dying to go back. It’s so beautiful there.

    I took Melody to Yosemite Valley a half-year later when she was 4 (when Tuolumne Meadows was inaccessible due to snow), and she has absolutely no memory of it. (Sounds like you!) šŸ™‚

    I agree with Terri – the Christening gown should be enough of a gift. If you wish to give something else, however, I would suggest a silver baby cup, or something from the Waterford or Royal Doulton range for babies. Money is nice, but something that will be an heirloom is nicer.

    I too think the gown is sufficient. Otherwise, I like a sterling (or pewter) cup – something monogrammed. Of course, I throw monograms and everything that’s not glue down.

    Congratulations on reaching Rivendell, I need to get back on the road (I’ve got stuck at the Prancing Pony). Have a lovely time at Yosemite, I went last year during my trip to California it’s an amazing place.
