Gingerbread House!

September 14, 2009 by jillejones

I came home from work on Friday to find the package with my Gingerbread House chart and materials waiting for me. Like I predicted, I dropped everything else and started it Friday night. Luke was at his dad’s and I spent a lot of time on it this weekend…I finished the first part; the back of the house:

Luke woke up with a fever this morning so I stayed home in the morning and Tom went to work, then we  traded places at lunch. I got a fair start on the next part done but haven’t taken a picture of it yet. I’m a little intimidated by the finishing work, but I have a lot of stitching to do before I have to really worry about it. I love this design!!

Tiny House Update…

September 10, 2009 by jillejones

We met with our brother-in-law last night and went over the house plans;  he’s working on the next rev of the sketch and then we’ll figure out the pricing details. It’s very exciting! I’m sure it will be interesting since it probably won’t be done until February, but it will all be worth it in the end. Remind me I said that, in a few months…

I’ve been working steadily on the Oak Island piece; I’ve finally reached the bottom left edge of the island (not of the chart; I’m not that fast!) so I got to use a color other than green or grey last night. I also got notice that my Gingerbread Stitching House from Victoria Sampler shipped yesterday, so I may drop everything and pick that up as soon as it arrives. If anyone hasn’t seen it yet, here’s the link:

I can’t wait! Oh how I need more hours in the day…

2 New Projects

September 8, 2009 by jillejones

I didn’t have the best 3 day weekend, but I’m not going to get into it right now. I spent the entire weekend sick, and did at least get a lot of stitching done as a result. I have two progress pictures to share; this first is a project I’d forgotten I’d started. I came across it a little while ago, and started working on it again. I just love it! It’s “Hanky Pysanky” by Ink Circles, using the Rainbow colors instead of the Pastels:

The second is “Pirate Treasure Oak Island” by Lynn Nicoletti. We’re planning to do a pirate them in the baby’s room, so I’m trying to stitch this and the Bothy Threads “Cut Thru Pirate Ship” before then. We’ll see if they really both get done or not…this one was Tom’s vote for which one to start first.

Instead of using2 strands of DMC 3013 (the lighter green in the picture) I’m using 1 strand of 3013 and 1 strand of Krienik glow-in-the-dark. It’s not a tremendous amount of fun to work with, but the effect should be worth it in the end. I only started it last weekend and haven’t worked on it very much until yesterday. Hopefully it will go quickly!

Of course, we finally got the network set up at home so I can get back online and play Lord of the Rings Online, so we’ll see how much stitching I’m doing in my free time. It’s nice to finally be getting settled into the new house a little bit!

Quick Post

September 4, 2009 by jillejones

Well, we still don’t know what we’re going to do about remodeling, but our brother-in-law drew up some gorgeous plans and we’ll talk to him next week in greater detail about it all.

We took a couple pictures while we were at Disneyland for my birthday last week. It was a great day; it was very hot, but there was no one there. Since I have an annual pass there is a special bonus this year (you know, instead of getting in free since that’s their current birthday promotion). I got to choose from a list of things, and I selected the special fastpass option. Each person in the group got 6 fastpasses, 3 each of 2 kinds, that can be used on a variety of rides. There were still a few rides I could go on, so it wasn’t a bad day (and it meant I didn’t have to wait very long when they went on rides I couldn’t). I got a couple pictures; I don’t really like having pictures taken of myself when I’m pregnant because I feel fat and gross! But oh well. Here’s one of the three of us:

And one of just Luke, who really liked the sunflowers:

I’ve been sick all week and plan to take it easy most of the weekend, so hopefully I’ll have some stitching pictures to share in my next post!

Birthday Flowers, and House, part 1

August 26, 2009 by jillejones

Although my birthday isn’t actually until tomorrow, I’m not planning to be at work tomorrow, so Tom sent these to work today instead:

I love getting flowers. :) They smell wonderful too. Definitely a happy thing for the afternoon, yes?

I figure it’s about time I post some house pictures. Bear in mind these are “before” pictures.  Here is the house from the outside, front:

Living Room:

view from dining room into the living room:

Kitchen:

small “family” room off of kitchen (will be an office I think, for us):

Hall bathroom:

Master bath:

Backyard:

Garage:

Hall, master on left, dining room straight ahead:

The bedrooms are, well, bedrooms; nothing very interesting except that the paint color has changed (haven’t taken after pictures yet of those anyway).

There are several things we’ve done already: re-textured the living room, replaced the door casings and baseboards, re-painted the entire house except for the 3rd bedroom. We actually painted the hall cabinets white (to contrast with the walls and not look so dark) and hung rounded shelves off the top part. We have also replaced the appliances in the kitchen, and Tom fixed the horrendous plumbing mess in the garage. The previous owners basically has a fixture tacked on the wall for the washer and dryer hook-ups, and long pipes running across the length of the wall to and from the water softener, before being regulated at the main. The house originally had the Quest pipes (plastic things) and those were replaced after some class action lawsuit, but in the garage they weren’t replaced properly; the old hook-ups were just left in the wall but not connected to anything. It was so cheesy. Tom fixed the plumbing and it now goes into the attic, with new hookups on the wall, like so:

water main:

The only other “after” picture I’ve taken so far is of the kitchen (can click this one to make it bigger):

I don’t have a good picture of the oven here, but it’s actually a dual oven with a small one on the top and regular sized one on the bottom (no separate broiler or storage drawer). It’s awesome; the little oven heats up in 3 minutes. Oh, and that is the most awesome refridgerator; I’vebeen drooling over it for almost a year now, since we first started looking at houses.

A couple other things to note: the deck takes up most of the yard, and is infested with termites. Rather than have it dealt with by the seller we took a check and will be ripping it out and putting in a smaller patio so the kids will have some actual play space in the yard. We’re planning to rip out the yards also; the grass is very dead, as the pictures show.

There’s one other very big thing we have to do, and sooner rather than later. The master bath is atrocious. A previous owner put in a big soaking tub, but the room is far too small for it. There is no “elbow” room next to the toilet because a ledge sticks out, and there isn’t even room for a regular-size towel rod on the wall behind the door. Also, they did a crappy job on the installation; it’s not properly installed and the tub is cracked. The three walls that the tub touches were (badly) re-textured, but the fourth wall was left the original texture. This isn’t the only incompetence we’ve encountered, though; the hall light is wired incorrectly and doesn’t always work from both switches, and the whole living room was wired incorrectly also (the living room has since been fixed).

Since we’re planning to rip out the master bath, we are toying with the idea of adding on to the house to make it bigger and add a proper walk-in closet to the master. We’re still in the very early stages and waiting for plans to be drawn up, but we definitely have to do something and now would be the time.

The hall bath is going to be updated also (new cabinets/counters/sinks/faucets, new toilet and lights and fixtures, and tile instead of linoleum). So, the work is definitely NOT done. We’re talking about hiring it out since our brother-in-law is a contractor and does amazingly gorgeous work. We stand a chance of having it all done before the baby if we hire it out. If we do it ourselves? Yeah, not so much.

So, there’s the first round of house pictures. As I take “after” pictures I’ll post them. It may be awhile, though, if we’re pushing out walls…

3rd Grade!

August 20, 2009 by jillejones

Well, I’ve uploaded house “before” pictures and will get to them eventually, but that will be a separate post. Today was Luke’s first day of 3rd grade! How can he be in 3rd grade already?! It’s so hard for me to believe. I got a picture of him in front of the new house:

And another at his desk:

He has some friends in his class, which is great. I managed to get up early enough to get him there; I actually rode into work early with Tom for a change. He suggested we go to CVS and get all of the school supplies before the crowd. What a great idea; we found everything except for a zippered pencil pouch.

In other news, I took a picture of my finish on Saturday; I had about 20 minutes left of stitching on “From Sea to Shining Sea” so I worked on it between packing and loads of laundry. Note that I haven’t stitched since…but here it is:

So, that’s it for now! Since I won’t be stitching again for a little while I’ll save the house entry (or entries) as filler for the stitching drought…

Busy, busy

August 13, 2009 by jillejones

Wow, I meant to post again sooner, but life has gotten in the way! First off, we spent the night at Petco Park for the Padres first ever Cub Scout overnight. Here is Luke with his friend:

It was an interesting experience, and one I plan to never, ever repeat again. Oh, Luke had a blast. Me? Well, not so much. The game started at 7:05pm and went for 3 hours.  The Padres won for a change, so that was nice. After the game there were fireworks, then we waited a half hour or so for the rest of the stadium to empty. At this point we went down to a bleacher area where there was pizza, cookies, and drinks (no food allowed on the field, so I assume the people in charge wanted to make sure there was no excuse for someone to be hungry overnight). Around 11:30 we got to head out onto the field, and at 12:15 they started the movie “Sandlot” on the big screen. The information we’d received in advance said that it would be “lights out” after the movie. Apparently it was my mistake for taking that literally. The movie ended at 1:45 or so, but the lights stayed on the entire night, until “wake up time” at 6am. Oh, then there was the NOISE. Blowers and power washers were on the entire night; it was insanely loud even with earplugs.

I managed to get about a half hour of sleep sometime after 4am, then got to sleep again for a few hours after we got home. To say I was pretty useless for the next week or so is an understatement. It was quite a sight, though:

Note that this picture was taken after the 6am wake up time, so the lights had just been turned out…

And the happy camper in the morning:

It was definitely a neat idea, but there were things they could have done to make it less unpleasant, like have the event on a night where there isn’t a game scheduled the following day, so the stadium can be cleaned in the morning and not throughout the entire night. I still don’t know how long it actually takes to clean the entire stadium; they started around 11pm and the washers were still going when we left aroung 6:40am. Crazy.

In other news, we closed escrow on the house and have been busy getting work done on it. The plan is to move in this weekend. I’ll post some “before and after” pictures in a subsequent entry, once I have “after” pictures…

Stitching Weekend

July 20, 2009 by jillejones

So much for the slip and slide; Luke and his friend managed to rip a hole in the water inlet Friday afternoon, the second time he used it. I haven’t looked into vinyl patches yet to see if it’s possible to repair. It was fun for the two days he got to use it though I guess…

I managed to stitch a LOT this weekend. It was really hot and Tom was watching the bike race so it was easy to sit and stitch while Luke played with legos, had a friend over, etc. We did go to my in-laws’ house Sunday afternoon to cool off in their pool for awhile. How I wish we had a/c.

I’ve been working primarily on Little House Needleworks’ “From Sea to Shining Sea”. I made a small change in the southwest panel; the color “tumbleweed” was called out for the window outlines and the clouds, but the floss that came with my pattern is exactly the same color as the fabric (which was the recommended fabric). I tried it for the first window and ripped it out because it wasn’t visible at all. I had lots of the white left from the mountain panel so I used that instead. This is coming along SO quickly now!

Summer Fun

July 17, 2009 by jillejones

Well I’ve been stitching away since the last post but haven’t stopped to take any pictures. I’ll try this weekend!

We bought Luke a slip and slide this week and finally got it out yesterday. He sure enjoyed it! He’s planning to have a friend spend the night tonight so I expect a lot of backyard fun this afternoon and tomorrow as it’s hot. I loved this picture:

First 2009 Finish

July 13, 2009 by jillejones

I finally finished something this year!! It’s a small project, “By the Light of the Moon” by The Primitive Needle. I stitched a lot this weekend (not just on this) and even went swimming yesterday because it was so darn hot. I can’t wait to finally have air conditioning someday…

I’ve also been working on “From Sea to Shining Sea” and found a work in progress that I had forgotten I’d started, so I’ll have more stitching pictures to share soon I hope!
